Carnival of Genealogy, 46th Edition

Welcome to the April 18, 2008 edition of the Carnival of Genealogy. The topic for this edition is: inherited traits. Where'd you get those baby blues? That luscious red hair? A love for adventure? A talent for music? Our DNA combines in just such a way as to make us the unique individuals we are. But what traits did we get from who? These questions are addressed in today's edition of the COG. The weather's getting warmer. Might be time to put the coffee maker away and brew up a tall glass of iced tea. Pour yourself a glass of whatever suits your fancy and grab yourself a lemon bar. The carnival's in town!

Bill West starts us off with West in New England: AVERAGE posted at West in New England. Bill would have us believe that he's just an average guy but we know better. Here he divulges where he got his love for reading and books which he parlayed into a career for himself. Stop by and see what other traits Bill inherited... Thanks for sharing Bill!

Check it out for yourself and while you're reading her blog be sure to click on the link to the blond map of Europe. Looks good to me (I love the term Baltic blond)! Thanks so much for sharing your family traits with us Chery! Great post!

Jasia presents It's In The Genes posted at Creative Gene. The older I get the more obvious physical family traits are to me. I can see so much of myself in my mom and dad, and in my kids. My son is the spitting image of my dad. The older my daughter gets the more she looks like me. I have a couple pictures to share that tell my story. I invite you to stop by and see for yourself.

It concerns a certain type of fruit but I'll let you head on over to his blog to discover what it is yourself. Thanks for another entertaining post Thomas!

John Newmark presents Family Traits posted at Transylvanian Dutch. John has a very interesting post examining some non-physical traits that run in his family. Religion is not something that I would have thought to be an inherited trait but John's article caused me to pause and consider the possibility. Check it out and see what you think. Thanks for sharing, John!

footnoteMaven presents Blame It On The Ancestry Nova posted at footnoteMaven. Our fM was fated to be a photo-book-magazine-autograph pack-rat. I mean collector! No doubt it's in her genes. Stop by and read fM's blog and see which traits she inherited and from whom. A wonderful read, as always. She didn't mention inheriting a writing gene... but I'll bet there's one there somewhere! Thanks for joining us Becca!

OMcHodoy presents A Shocking Experience posted at Orations of OMcHodoy. Well, if we were giving out a prize for the most unusual family trait I think it would go to OMcHodoy. Some have a darker side. Ruth seems to have uncovered one such trait in her family. Stop by and read her well written and thought provoking article. Thanks for sharing with us, Ruth!

Becky Wiseman presents Why I am the way I am? posted at kinexxions. Regrettably, Becky did not inherit eyes in the back of her head from her mom. It's a shame really. Kathryn Lake Hogan presents Crooked Little Fingers and Temper, temper... posted at LOOKING4ANCESTORS. Kathryn's first article on her crooked little fingers is cute and intriguing, don't miss it, but her second post on temper has an impressive analysis of the family trait. You'll be amazed with her look back at her ancestors' personalities and what she's able to point to that contributed to making them the people that they were. It's really quite well done. Thanks for sharing your family traits with us Kathryn!

Miriam Robbins Midkiff presents Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes... posted at AnceStories: The Stories of My Ancestors saying, "Random thoughts about the physical and personal traits that gallop through our family!" The one family trait that is no surprise to those who read Miriam's wonderful blogs regularly is writing. She definitely inherited that gene! But check out her article and you'll discover that there are many other interesting traits that run in her family too! Thanks for sharing your family traits with us Miriam!

Randy Seaver presents I Am a Unique Person posted at Genea-Musings. One of the many traits that Randy inherited is an analytical ability which is obvious from his article. He is thorough in his analysis of his family's traits and it is this thoroughness that serves him so well and makes him such a terrific genealogy researcher and blogger! But the most endearing trait he inherited is his "glass is half full" way of looking at the world. God bless you for that Randy! The world needs more like you! Head on over and check out the other traits on Randy's list. Thanks for sharing with us Randy!

Terry Snyder presents This little piggy... | Desktop Genealogist - www.thenews-messenger.com - Fremont, OH posted at Desktop Genealogist saying, "You know how in the middle of the night you sometimes get these absolutely brilliant ideas that don't seem quite so brilliant in the bright light of day? Well, apparently the morning after on this idea it was overcast and raining and not enough light hit my retinas telling me, wait don't do it. This just proves that a bad combination to inherit is my grandmother's love for story telling, my father's warped sense of humor, with a dollop of my mother's creativity. Yup, definitely not a good combo. Boy, is that one honkin' big foot. My husband is never going to let me live this down." OK, I left this one till last because it will have you laughing so hard you won't be able to read any other posts afterwards. Head on over and have yourself a good giggle. Terry's done it again! Thanks Terry!

That concludes this edition of the Carnival of Genealogy. Didn't these articles paint wonderful images of who we are? And now we all know what each other looks like! (Aww, you know you've been curious ;-) Special thanks to Lisa Alzo for the topic suggestion! I'm still pressed for time so I won't be able to personally thank everyone who promotes the COG on their blog this time around but please know that I am grateful to each and every one of you for helping to get the word out!

And now it's time for a Call for Submissions! The topic for the next edition of the Carnival of Genealogy is: A Place Called Home. It's time for a geography lesson. Pick out a city/town/village where one of your ancestors once lived and tell us all about it. When was it founded? What is it known for? Has is prospered or declined over the years? Have you ever visited it or lived there? To a certain extent, we are all influenced by the environment we live in. How was your ancestor influenced by the area where they lived? Take us on a trip to the place your ancestor called home. The deadline for submissions is May 1, 2008.
