Happiness is a Warm Puppy

We have a new member in our family. I'd like you to meet Kajetan, our new puppy. He's a 7.5 week old red Doberman. He isn't actually "red". He's chocolate brown with tan markings. In this breed that color combination is referred to as "red" though.

I wasn't ready for a new puppy when I came across this little guy's litter. But his breeding was too good to pass up. His parents are titled in conformation as well as obedience (which actually means more to me), the same as my Caesar's were.

For those of you who may not have seen a Doberman puppy before, you'll notice that they aren't born with pointed ears. They have to be cropped to achieve that look. When I got Caesar his ears were already cropped so I had no choice. But I'm not willing to put my puppy through that unnecessary surgery for solely cosmetic reasons. So he will keep the "natural" ears he was born with.

You're probably wondering, what's with the name, Kajetan? It took a full two weeks to decide on his name. I wanted a Polish name, something uncommon but fairly easy to pronounce. That last part was a real challenge! I can't tell you how many times I went cover to cover through William F. Hoffman's book, First Names of the Polish Commonwealth: Origins & Meanings, because I've lost track. I made lists and discussed them with my family. They're a hard group to please. In the end my husband and I made the decision on his name. We'll call him Kaj (rhymes with "tie" and "bye") for short which is a nickname for Kajetan as well as a name in its own right.

Kaj spent his first night with us last night and none of got any sleep. That boy's got a set of lungs on him that's for sure! Boy oh boy am I dragging tail this morning.

Kaj and Vladi (my cat) are getting along wonderfully. They both chase and tackle each other and romp around the house together. Both are the same size right now (10 lbs) but that won't last for long.

He just fell asleep... now's my chance to get somework done!

  4. What a handsome guy! While there are times I want to wring her neck - bed pillows come to mind - it is wonderful to have a dog in the house again. You do realize it's going to be a while before there's any return to normalcy at your house, don't you?

  6. I found your blog while googling Polish leaders' names on an old WWI poster I have. Woodrow Wilson is the only American shown on the poster; I believe them all to be allies against Russia. The Polish Arms flag shown on the poster indicates a white Eagle with no crown. Names include: Jozef Haller, Debski, Wlbandurski, Paderewski, Pilsudski, Kosciuszko, Pulaski - there is also a map of the towns of Wawel, Warsaw and Cracow (now Kracow). Would you happen to have any other information that would link these people to each other?

    Thanks!

  10. Congratulations! He's absolutely beautiful! Try a wind up clock at night, it worked for all my dogs when they were puppies. Take lots of pictures, they grow so fast!

  11. Thanks to all for your very kind remarks! Little by little Kaj is adjusting to his new home. Last night he woke us up every 2 hours on the hour to go outside. But at least he didn't cry all night.

Wendy, Kaj's tail was already docked. It's hard to find a Dobe with a natural tail. They are docked when they are 3 days old. So unless you know you want to buy a puppy before they are born and you make your request for a natural tail known to your breeder you're not likely to find a pup with a tail. Too bad. I think their tails are cute.

Sher, All the men you listed (except Woodrow Wilson) are Polish patriots. Most were generals, all were significant in Polish history. They lived at different times and fought different battles against different armies but they all stepped up to the challenge of defending Poland.

My camera is getting a good workout... the video camera too. I'll try to contain myself though and not turn this into a Kaj-blog. But you will see more pictures from time to time. :-)

  13. Aw, Jasia, Kaj is terrific! And I'm with you 100% on not clipping his ears. (Yeah, I would have left his tail long, too, given the choice.) Puppy! What fun!
