What a profoundly lovely post. I feel it's kismet that I discovered your blog (and this post) today, because this very morning I received a (photocopy of a) photo (via my aunt) of one of my sets of maternal great-grandparents and it was the first time I had ever seen either of those two people in my whole life. Upon looking at those faces, I suddenly saw myself in my great-grandmother, Marie, who had round checks and soft features just like me. I've never looked much like my parents or grandparents but suddenly I see myself in this wonderful face from the past. Thank you for sharing your beautiful story and for giving me the chance to tell you about my special day, too.Big hugs,Jessica
Thank you for stopping by Jessica! I feel like we're kindred spirits now with both of us favoring our great grandmothers. It's so nice to feel that connection, isn't it?
I'm so glad you received this picture. Pictures are so special! I can see myself in one of my grandmothers and other family members in my great-grandparents.
Jasia,Wonderful to have a picture of your great grandmother. I have often had the same feeling of familiarity when I sit and look at those old faces of my past. Satisfying, so soul satisfying. Thanks for sharing Ludwicka with us.
It's funny how when we don't have a picture we create a mental image instead. I picture my great-grandmother Kelly as somber, dressed in a plain black frock. Maybe I'll be as lucky as you one day and find out what she really looked like!
What a wonderful post. I too have several photos of my grandmothers and great grandmothers and their mothers. In each one, they all have the same pose and expression about them. I wonder why no one ever smiled in photos back then. However, what wonderful treasures we have been blessed with.
I'm not a great writer, but you inspired me. Here is my entry into "Give Their Face a Place"http://genealogypassion.blogspot.com/2010/03/give-their-face-place.htmlKeep up the good work.
I like the way you presented her picture then took away the austere with your feeling about it. I agree with the previous posters, it is a special gift. Thanks for sharing
There's pretty, and then there's beauty. I think your great-grandmother is beautiful. She has a wholesomeness and down-to-earthness about her that is very appealing - beautiful! - to me. I hope you have found other information that tells you about her personality, her life, her accomplishments. They may change how you think about her appearance.... It is a beautiful photo!
Thank you all for your wonderful comments about Ludwika! I've had this photo for several months now and was just waiting for the right opportunity to share it. I have the greatest respect and admiration for her and her husband, my great grandfather Szymon (I don't have a photo of him :-( . How I wish I could have known them! They are my only great grandparents who emigrated from Poland.
