The Summer of '42

My mom (Lucy) and her best friend (Helen) are pictured here. The bathing beauties were posing for pictures at Belle Isle Park, (Detroit) I believe. These pictures were taken during WWII and they were probably posing as pin-up girls... or at least as "pin-up" as their good Catholic upbringing allowed them to be. I know my mom wrote letters to a few boys during the war and probably Helen did too. It's quite possible that copies of these pictures were tucked into those letters.

  1. O.K. Here's a wethod to solve the 1930 census puzzle. You have the death record and date of Viola; b. 1892 in MI; so now get the obit from the newspapers of that town for her. It may give her maiden name; and may give more information on Adam and also her brothers and sisters! You can also find Adam's obit which will lead you another step back....

  3. I remember a few swimming sessions at Belle Isle but I never looked as stylish as your mother and her friend did.

  4. Pin-up girls, bathing beauties.... Whatever you call them they are lovely. It is fun to see the 1940s-era swimsuits. I like your presentation on the scrapbook page.
