Creative Gene Podcasts

I've had a few requests for audio podcasts of my Creative Gene blog over the last couple of years. I've avoided going down that road because I feared the learning curve for the necessary technology was more than I wanted to take on. Then I read Schelly's blog post. She announced that she was using to offer podcasts of Tracing the Tribe to her readers. She was kind enough to send me an email explaining that she was using which reads your blog posts so you don't have go through recording them. That sounded good to me :-)

So I'm giving a try. At the beginning of each of my blog posts you will see a "listen here" button. All you have to do is click that button to hear the post read to you or see links to download a podcast. Using requires me to use full feeds instead of short feeds. I don't like using full feeds for a couple of reasons but I'm willing to give this a try for a few weeks to see how it goes. Since my previous posts only had short feeds, you won't be able to go back to hear the full audio on them. But, you should be able to hear it on this post and all future posts for the next few weeks while I evaluate the situation.

You can subscribe to Creative Gene podcasts by clicking on the OdioGo button in the right side column of this page.

Thanks for the tip, Schelly!

Do you like this idea? Will you make use of it? Let me know what you think!

  1. That's pretty cool! But it doesn't read the whole post?? Am I missing a continue button?

  2. Hmmm. It's supposed to read the whole post! I thought once I enabled full feeds it would do it automatically. Maybe I'll have to look into this...

    Thanks for letting me know!

  3. Hi, Jasia. My glitch was that I had my Feedburner feeds Summary thing under Optimize set to ACTIVE. That makes an automatic short feed. If you DEACTIVATE the Summary thingy (It is the last thing on the list of items on the left of the Optimize page on your Feedburner account (If you are using feedburner). Once that was DEACTIVATED, things worked beautifully. Also on your own blogspot, you also need to set feeds to FULL. In any case, write to support at OdioGo - they have been very helpful. I have suggested they add this topic to their FAQ :-)

  4. I really like this idea - so I tried to set mine up to do this also. But, I'm having a problem with it (I've already emailed them) - It's telling me it can't read a foreign language - but it's just the person's name. I suppose I could remove that particular post but - I hope they can help me resolve as I have several family members who like to read my blog- but have a hard time because of the size of print. Thank you for sharing this good idea!!!

  5. The audio/podcast feature appears to be working fine now. I think it just needed time to propagate.

  6. I've thought of using OdioGo on my own blog at Irish Genealogical, but haven't taken the plunge yet. Seeing it in action here is very helpful to me in making the decision of whether or not to use it! I think I may give it a try.

  7. OK, I was all set not to like this, but I have to admit I really did.

Do I wish it was your voice, yes! But in the alternative this isn't bad. I listened to the last COG while doing the next poster.

There were some amusing moments. "Celebrate spring and sip slowly" made me smile as did GeneaBlogie.

All in all I think this has some real potential. Can you select which posts you want recorded, or is it every post?

Jasia, always on the cutting edge.

  8. Jasia, I love the *idea.* The voice was too robotic and the rhythms were wrong; also (I listened to the start of your post about odio) it can't tell the difference between "read" present tense and "read" past tense. These are all small things but they make it difficult to listen to. Still way better than computerized readers used to be. Thank you for working on this! -- Harold
