Polish Pastor on Local Radio Show

Polish Catholic metro Detroiters will enjoy hearing Fr. Mark Borkowski, pastor of Sweetest Heart of Mary parish and administrator of St. Josaphat and St. Joseph parishes, speak about these historic parishes on a Michigan Catholic Radio (1090AM) program May 27 and again on May 29. For those who don't live locally, it will also be broadcast on www.michigancatholicradio.org. For more information visit SHM parish blog.

Fr. Borkowski is one of my favorite people. He is very dedicated to Detroit's Polonia and his own Polish genealogy as well as the three historic Polish churches he is the spiritual leader of.

Review of Dom Polski: Dance Hall Days of Detroit's Polonia

Dom Polski: Dance Hall Days of Detroit's Polonia is a documentary written and produced by Laurie A. Gomulka Palazzolo with Susan F. Tyszka as Chief Editorial Advisor and Researcher. I ordered the 2-hour DVD directly from Laurie because I wasn't able to attend one of the sell-out premiere showings this film has had recently in the metro Detroit area. I'm very interested in the history of the Dom Polski halls as my grandparents first met at the east side hall back in 1914 and in later years attended many functions at the west side hall.

The first half hour of the documentary tells the story of why so many Poles left their homeland (roughly 1880-1920) in the hopes of a better life in America and what they found when they got to Detroit. The narration was very well done and the subject well researched. The visuals consisted of old photos, map images and some short video clips. Also in this part of the film the tie-in was made to the founding of the Dom Polski halls (Dom Polski translates to "Polish Home").

The remainder of the documentary was about the history of Polka music and the significant role that Detroit's Polish musicians played in writing and playing Polonia's ethnic music. The key musicians mentioned repeatedly were Staś Wisniach and Ted Gomulka though a myriad of other local Polonia musicians were also featured including Johnny Sadrack, Stanley Adamus, and Ted Lach. The images included many, many playbills advertising the musicians' appearances at local dance halls, old photos of the musicians and dancers enjoying their lively music, some film clips of the Big Band days of the 1940s and a precious film clip of a traditional Polish wedding from the 1950s-60s era. All the while Polka music played in the background, well mixed so as not to interfere with the narration.

On the one hand I was disappointed that there wasn't more information about the Dom Polski Halls themselves... given the title of the documentary I expected them to be featured more. There wasn't much information about events held at the halls other than dancing. My grandparents weren't dancers and I've always wondered what else might have enticed them to go there and eventually meet each other. In later years I'm told they attended political fund raising dinners at the hall and I would have liked to have known what politicians they might have seen there. I didn't get much to go on from this film.

On the other hand, my mother's passion was dancing. She went to grade school with Johnny Sadrack (not his real surname but a stage name he adopted) and in her post-high school, pre-married years she lived to visit Detroit's dance halls. She was a great dancer too. Friends and relatives would stand in line to dance with her she was so light on her feet. And her feet couldn't be still if a Polka was playing! But I digress... I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the music that my mom danced to and seeing the faces of the band leaders and members she would have known from her neighborhood. I loved seeing the old photos of the various dance halls she went to and I reflected back on the Polish weddings I attended in my youth when I saw the wedding film clip.

All in all the documentary was well worth the $20 I paid for it. It's really very well done. If you have Polish immigrant roots in Detroit you will appreciate this film. If you are a second generation Polish American who grew up in the Polish neighborhoods of Detroit you will love this film. I only wish my mother could have seen this documentary. She would have truly loved it.

Haller's Army Troops Returning to the U.S.: Arrival of the Princess Matoika

Haller’s Army Troops Returning to the United States: Arrival of the Princess Matoika
May 23,1920

By Robert W. Postula

This is the second in a series of articles that identifies returning Haller’s Army troops who had any history of association with the State of Michigan. This series details and identifies ten ships that made at least twelve trips returning the expatriated troops. The articles provide valuable
information for researchers by identifying the following.

  • Who were the returning soldiers, what were their ages, marital status, profession and last
permanent address prior to leaving for military duty in Europe?

  • Who was the nearest known person, relationship and address?

  • To what place was the expatriated soldier returning and in some instances, who was the
person he or she was joining?

  • Important information regarding their places of birth. (Most were born in Poland, and were classified as Ret. Res. (Returning Residents) some were born in the United States and were thus U.S. citizens.

  • Valuable emigration and/or naturalization information leads for many of the soldiers.
The second of the ships returning Haller’s Army troops was the Princess Matoika, which left the port of Danzig (now known as Gdańsk) on May 2, 1920, proceeded to Antwerp, Belgium and Southampton, England and arrived at New York May 23, 1920.

The Ship(2)
The ship was built in Stettin (Polish Szczecin) as the steamship Kiautschou for the Hamburg-American Line. It had a passenger capacity of 327 passengers in 1st class, 103 in 2nd class, 80 in 3rd class, 1,700 in steerage and carried a crew of 230. In Feb 1904 it was sold to the North German Lloyd Line and renamed the Prinzess Alice. In Aug 1914 the Prinzess Alice was interred in Manila. On April6, 1917, it was seized by the US Shipping Board and renamed the Princess Matoika. In 1918 it became a US Navy transports and was handed back to the US Shipping Board in 1919. In 1920 it was chartered to the US Mail Steamship Company.

The Passengers(3)
Passenger list information for the troops returning on the Matoika is contained in Volume 6406 that is available on LDS film #1571353. Thece are 1,707 returning troops listed on pages 184 through 320. Extracting each soldier’s name from the pages would be a project of great magnitude. Therefore this extraction is limited to those troops who either originally resided in, had relatives in, or were returning to the state of Michigan. This extraction has 205 soldiers listed. Four exceptions have been made to the previous guideline used (Michigan related troops) but are included in this Michigan extraction of 201 soldiers.

During the process of review I found potential leads to possible ancestors. The first, was Walter Pastula (the same name as my father) and the second Jan Pustola, both of New York. Walter Pastula coincidentally was reportedly born in Kolbuszowa, the birth area of my grandmother Rozalia Dluzeń Pastula. As an additional note of interest, two priests, Rev. Frs. Kowalski and Rozmus born in Poland were also part of the extraction, were from New York and added for interest.

Payment of passage was apparently split between the Polish and United States governments. The text for column 16 reads, ‘By whom was passage paid? Whether alien paid his own passage, whether paid by any other person, or by any corporation, society, municipality, or government.” An analysis of the passenger list pages “column 16” identifies that 703 soldiers had their passage paid by the Polish government, while 756 soldiers had their passage paid by the United States government. Eleven (11) pages were incorrectly noted or absent of any notation. These 11 pages list 248 soldiers whose payment of passage is not clear.

The Data
The format of data provided for each soldier is as follows. The surname appears first in bolded type, followed by the given name, then the page number and line sequence where the soldier is found, his age in the format “years/months”, followed by marital status (S=single, M=married, W=widower) occupation, last permanent location, the nearest person known and relationship with their address, the length of time at the last reported location, and finally the place of birth. In some instances a bonus appears providing information related to a naturalization or previous emigration.

Editor’s Note: It is standard practice that spellings from documents not be changed when extracting information from source records, even when it is known to be in error. Spellings included in these extractions are as they appeared in the passenger lists. When an item was subject to interpretation a question mark (?) has been inserted, to caution that the data was a best guess. Likewise when a guess was made, the offered interpretation has a question mark (?) following it.

Lose Weight and Enhance Your Manhood, Circa 1900

Every once in a while I get to thinking it would be fun to turn back the hands of time and go back a hundred years or so to an era when life was less complicated. It would be nice to experience that slower pace of life, eat that wholesome, often home-grown food, and enjoy a naiveté about world problems. Back in those days mass communication was vastly limited over the options we have today and people weren't bombarded with images of starving children in foreign countries, the aftermath of terrorist bombings, and the devastation of a landfall hurricane. Oh sure there were grainy black and white images in the newspapers from time to time, and a good radio announcer could paint vivid images in listeners' minds, but there were also certain commonly respected guidelines that the media respected. The news was somewhat "sanitized", more or less cleaned up for general audiences.

Besides newspapers and radio, there were also a couple other popular ways to get information out to the public... printed posters and catalogs. Posters were both artistic creations and a medium of communication. Some were more one than another, some were a good blend of both. They may have announced a night of dancing at the local dance hall, encouraged buying savings bonds, or reminded people to be kind to animals. Often, the posters were large advertisements put up to promote sales of a product. Catalogs, too, featured advertisements that regaled the benefits of items for sale. I came across two such product ads today that sent me first into gales of laughter and then off on this train of thought about more naive times. Allow me to share them with you now and give you your giggle for the day...

The first is an add for Sanitized Tapeworms, to help you lose weight. I kid you not! The Diet Blog, ran a post about this today. Evidently this product was a legitimate one from the 1900s. The ad tells us that the tapeworms are easy to swallow and give "no ill effects". Wow. Can you imagine? D'ya think your Grammy or Great Auntie Genevieve would have been tempted? Keep in mind that lots of common "home remedies" were things we think are pretty gross these days (cod liver oil for whatever ails you comes to mind). Think about this product for a moment and then try to stifle your snickers while we move on to the next ad...

From the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices we find a page from the Sears Catalog of 1900. This is one that Gramps or Great Uncle Baltz may have been interested in... it's the Heidelberg Electric Belt. It "purported to enhance one's manhood through the joy of directly applied electricity". Yikes! This predecessor to today's e.d. pharmaceuticals probably didn't make you see blue but may have made you see stars!!! It evidently wasn't a big seller for Sears... gee, I wonder why not? ;-) Aww, come on, this had to make you grin (or grimace)!

So, OK. My trip down I-wish-I-could-visit-the-good-old-days lane has ended with a giggle and a sobering realization that naiveté wasn't always a good thing. Life for our ancestors might have been simpler, slower, and in some ways healthier, but it was also downright crude at times too. There was no Internet to search for product reviews, no Consumer's Report magazine to rate the value of a given product or service, and no hugely funded medical studies to evaluate the effectiveness of common health aids. Then, just as now, it was "buyers beware". Only now we have many more ways to investigate product promotion claims. I guess maybe these days aren't so bad... ;-)

Best WiFi Hotels for Genealogists

Those of you who are planning genealogy research trips this summer, especially genea-bloggers, will want to have access to the internet while you're on the road. So when it comes to making hotel reservations it's good to know which hotels offer the fastest, most reliable, yet free WiFi. You may also be interested in knowing which hotels are the worst for WiFi. Well boys and girls, you're in luck.

Just in time for the summer travel season, the HotelChatter web site has compiled a list of the Best WiFi Hotels 2007 and the Worst WiFi Hotels 2007. Topping the list of the best are the Marriott properties including Residence Inn, Courtyard (my personal favorite), and Springhill Suites. I'm not at all surprised by this. I travelled around the country for a month back in 2001 staying at Marriott properties whenever possible and enjoyed free internet access virtually everywhere. I don't travel often so I was surprised to learn that every other hotel in the nation hasn't gotten with the program yet... especially given how relatively inexpensive it is to install a wireless network!

You may be surprised to learn that some of the most well known luxury hotels make up the list of worst WiFi hotels. I know I was. How sad is that?

For those of you lucky enough to be traveling internationally to do your genealogy research, HotelChatter also offers International WiFi Hotel Experiences.

So, now excuses now... take your laptop along on your research trip and keep us posted on your adventures!

Haller’s Army Troops Returning to the U.S.; Arrival of the Antigone

Haller’s Army Troops Returning to the United States:
Arrival of the Antigone, April 18, 1920
by Robert W. Postula

This is the first in a series of articles that identifies returning Haller’s Army troops who had any history of association with the State of Michigan. This series will identify and detail ten ships that made at least twelve trips returning expatriated troops. The articles provide valuable information for researchers by identifying the following.
  • Who were the returning soldiers, what were their ages, marital status, profession and last permanent address prior to leaving for military duty in Europe?
  • Who was the nearest known person, relationship and address?
  • To what place was the expatriating soldier returning and, in some instances, who was the
person he or she was joining?
  • Important information regarding their places of birth. (Most were born in Poland, and were classified as Ret. Res. (Returning Residents); however, some were born in the United States and were thus U.S. Citizens.
  • Valuable emigration and/or naturalization information leads for many of the soldiers.

The first of the ships returning Haller’s Army troops was the Antigone, which left the port of Danzig (now known as Gdansk) on March 30, 1920. The Antigone proceeded to Antwerp, Belgium where it arrived on April 3rd It then proceeded to New York to where the troops disembarked on April 18, 1920.

The Ship
The Antigone was built originally in 1900 under the name Neckar for the North German Lloyd line. The Neckar had a passenger capacity of 181 passengers in 1st class, 116 in 2nd class, and 2,500 in 3rd class. After 1905 the capacity was changed to 369 2nd class, 217 3rd class, and 2,865 4th class. After her last crossing from Bremen to Baltimore in July 1914, she took refuge in the United States, where she was seized by U.S. authorities, renamed Antigone, and used by the U.S. government until 1921.(1)

The Passengers
Passenger list information for the returning General Haller troops was recorded on LDS film #1571338. There are 1,150 returning troops listed on 92 pages. Extracting each soldier’s name from the pages would be a project of great magnitude. Therefore this extraction is limited to those troops who either originally resided in, had relatives in, or were returning to the state of Michigan. This extraction has 136 soldiers listed. Some exceptions have been made to the previous guideline used (Michigan related troops) but are included in the Michigan extraction of 121 soldiers. Three nurses Maria Skura, Janina Szwed, and Jadwiga Garewska (Zarewska)joined the trip when the ship stopped at Antwerp on April 3, 1920. Interestingly the New York Times article mentioning the nurses’ boarding only mentions two-named Mahja Skura and Janina Szwede.(2) The latter New York Times article reference just cited, also mentions “The Polish Government brought the soldiers to Danzig and arranged the final preparations for their departure. Just prior to the sailing of the Antigone, Admiral Drowske, on behalf of the Polish Government presented 500 marks to each soldier and also to two [sic] Polish-American nurses who saw service in France and Poland.(3)

According to the passenger list, payment of passage for the returning soldiers was shared between the governments of Poland and the United States. The text for column 16 reads, “By whom was passage paid? (Whether alien paid his own passage, whether paid by any other person, or by any corporation, society, municipality, or government).” An analysis of the passenger list pages (column 16) identifies that a total of 975 soldiers had their passage paid by the Polish Government, while a total of 172 soldiers had their passage paid by the United States. Passage for the nurses was paid for by the Polish White Cross.

The Data
The format of data provided in this article for each extracted passenger follows. The surname appears first in bolded type, followed by the given name, then the page number and line sequence where the soldier’s data is found, followed by his age in the format “years/months”, followed by marital status (S=single, M=married, W=Widower), occupation, last permanent location, the nearest person known and relationship with the address, followed by the length of time at the last reported location, and finally the place of birth. In some instances an addendum appears providing information related to naturalization or a previous immigration.
