Carnival of Genealogy, 42nd Edition

Welcome to the February 18, 2008 edition of the Carnival of Genealogy. The topic for this edition is: iGene Awards 2007! I'm pleased to inform you that we officially have 23 founding members of the Academy of Genealogy and Family History. Yeah! At this, our first awards ceremony, each of our 23 members is announcing their best blog posts in the following 5 categories:
  • Best Picture
  • Best Screen Play
  • Best Documentary
  • Best Biography
  • Best Comedy
I just know you're going to enjoy this presentation of The Best of THE BEST for 2007! The knowledge, talent, and humor presented here will stimulate your mind and tickle your funny bone. Prepare to be impressed!

The members of the Academy were asked to write their own introductions. Many did but not all. For those who didn't, I've included a bit of their article in the way of an introduction.

And now, let the show begin!

M. Diane Rogers presents 2008 iGene Awards - Academy of Genealogy and Family History - Carnival of Genealogy posted at CanadaGenealogy, or, 'Jane's Your Aunt', saying, "All my own awards this year go to posts in the 2007 Advent Calendar of Christmas Memories. Rereading these made me feel a little sad at first, but I soon found myself smiling, then grinning, then laughing out loud."

Terry Thornton presents The Hill Country iGene Awards posted at Hill Country of Monroe County, Mississippi. The winners of the iGene Awards for Hill Country of Monroe Country are announced. Following the general rules of the Academy of Genealogy and History, here are the awards in five categories.

Randy Seaver presents It's Academy Awards time - the AGFH of course! posted at Genea-Musings. I knew there was method to my forgetfulness - I posted my candidates for my best posts on Genea-Musings for 2007 here, then neglected to pick one! Well, Jasia has stirred me to pick five ... in five different categories, and award them the, hmmm, let's call it the "Randy" - a beautiful small trophy of Rodin's The Thinker.

Craig Manson presents Carnival: The IGene Awards:GeneaBlogie's Best! posted at GeneaBlogie. We've dispensed with the red carpet, and the tiresome, and seemingly endless pre-show shows, so as the chorus said, On with the show!

footnoteMaven presents All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up! posted at footnoteMaven. We're here on the red carpet with the footnoteMaven who has nominated several of her 2007 Blog Posts for award consideration. Red Carpet trends come and go, but some styles are classic. Maven is wearing just such a classic style; a beautiful white silk and lace gown designed specifically for her by the House of Worth, Paris.

Becky Wiseman presents The 2007 iGene Awards for Kinexxions posted at kinexxions. Choosing the "BEST" of anything is certainly not an easy task and this definitely was not easy for me, I changed my mind many times. It is akin to asking a mother who her favorite child is or an actor the favorite part they ever played. But the deed is done, so, without further ado, here are my selections for the 2007 iGene awards for Kinexxions.

Thomas MacEntee presents Roll Out The Red Carpet! posted at Destination: Austin Family. If I were to hold an award ceremony within my own blog and looking only at the best posts made over the past year, I wonder which ones I would pick. With categories such as Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Documentary, Best Biography and Best Comedy, I wonder who would win? Here are my picks and I give them several thumbs up!

Lidian presents The iGene Awards: 42nd Carnival of Genealogy posted at The Virtual Dime Museum. And now - it's award time at the Academy of Genealogy and Family History (that's the AGFH, you know!).

Bill West presents LIGHTS! GEDCOMS! ACTION! posted at West in New England. I was going to play a number on my flutaphone, but let’s just get to the awards instead!

Dana Huff presents iGene Awards posted at Our Family History: A Genealogy Blog by Dana Huff, saying, "I was fairly silent on this blog in 2007 as my family, career, and other interests pushed genealogy into the back seat. However, I really liked this particular carnival idea."

Susan A. Kitchens presents For Your Consideration posted at Family Oral History Using Digital Tools [News], saying, "Daily Variety and Hollywood Reporter and the other "trades" are filled with ads for nominated films. The headline on those ads: "For Your Consideration." And my nominees are.... In addition to reading my nomination list, learn about the special red carpet for this award! Get a behind-the-scenes peek at the consultation I have with the out-of-work Fashionistas to the Glitterati who had time to take my calls and make my fashion statement dream come true. See how impossible it is for me to narrow the Best Documentary nominee down to a single choice. Remember again the September Comedy with my parody screenshot that, well, goes to 11. Have your people call my people. Let's do lunch. Always stay you. Never change, baby. May I have the envelope please?"

OMcHodoy presents The Oracle of OMcHodoy: And The Winners Are... posted at The Oracle of OMcHodoy, saying, "And now, the moment you've all been waiting for! The winners and nominees for the 2007 Posts of the Year! The post where YOU get to determine the Best Picture of the Year (cuz the blog owner couldn't!)."

Lori Thornton presents The Smoky Mountain iGene Awards posted at Smoky Mountain Family Historian. I chose to limit mine to calendar year 2007 even though posts through February 15 were eligible according to the rules. So without further ado, the winners are...

Jewelgirl presents IGENE AWARDS posted at Searching For Family Branches, saying, "Ladies And Gentlemen! I would like to share with you heartfelt stories from another time and place, so please join me at My igene Awards. No formal attire required, just a PC and a love of history needed. See you soon!"

Jessica Oswalt presents Here's My Best ... posted at Jessica's Genejournal. The first genealogy awards are here! I'll have to admit that this was not any easy post to write. I had a hard time choosing which posts to pick. I appreciate any feedback. So, here are my nominations!

Chery Kinnick presents 2007 in Review posted at Nordic Blue, saying, "Well now, doesn't this feel funny - nominating my own blog entries for a prestigious iGene Award. My little Norwegian g-g-grandmas will be turning in their graves, collectively thinking: "Where did we go wrong?" But, what the heck, it's time to make a run for it and hope that the Viking God of Humility can be forgiving, as well as humble."

Jasia presents And the iGene Award for 2007 Goes To... posted at Creative Gene, saying, "Ladies and gentleman, may I have your attention, please? I'd like to present the iGene Awards to the most deserving posts on the Creative Gene blog in 2007. I'm sure you'll agree that there have been many good posts on my blog this past year, but there are a few that I think deserve special recognition. Please enjoy these that I've chosen as my best of 2007!"

Janice Brown presents Cow Hampshire: The Best of the Best 2007 posted at Cow Hampshire. The year 2007 was a good one for blogging, and the genea-blogger articles were no exception. Although most of my stories do not relate to my own family, I did include a few that should be mentioned.

Steve Danko presents It Was a Tough Decision but the Award Goes to... posted at Steve's Genealogy Blog. I selected many of the winners, in part, based on reader input. And now, the envelope, please…

Apple presents Apple's Tree: And the Winner is..... posted at Apple's Tree, saying, "Apple’s Tree grew out of my desire to have a place to separate my family history from my day to day ramblings. A little more than a year it has grown and become part of a larger community. Here I present my favorites from 2007."

John Newmark presents Now that the writer's strike is over... posted at Transylvanian Dutch, saying, "At TransylvanianDutch, John Newmark hands out his awards, however, like at so many awards shows, there's at least one person who feels they have been slighted. Unlike those awards shows, this person actually stands up and objects. Whether or not John's response is adequate is up to you to decide."

Miriam Robbins Midkiff presents AnceStories Presents the iGene Awards posted at AnceStories: The Stories of My Ancestors, saying, "You like me! You really like me!" "The Best of the Best" is the theme of the 42nd Carnival of Genealogy, in which we are encouraged to submit our favorite posts of 2007 for the iGene Awards. The envelopes please...

Schelly Talalay Dardashti presents Best of the Best - iAwards for 2007 posted at Tracing the Tribe, We are asked to nominate our best blog posts of 2007.

That concludes this edition of the Carnival of Genealogy. I hope you have enjoyed the show! I think it was simply grand!!! Thanks to all who participated! This is the first time I've used participants' own introductions instead of writing them myself. What do you think? Do you like it this way? I have to admit it took me a fraction of the time I usually spend putting the COG together. I'd like to hear from the participants as to which way they'd prefer to be introduced for future editions. Do you want to do it or would you prefer me to do it? Leave a comment or email me privately, imjasia at yahoo dot com.

And now it's time for a Call for Submissions! The topic for the next edition of the Carnival of Genealogy will be: Technology. What technology do you most rely on for your genealogy and family history research? Select one piece of hardware (besides your computer), one piece of software (besides your internet browser), and one web site/blog (besides your own) that are indispensable to you. Resist the urge to dilute the impact of your 3 choices by mentioning several others you use and appreciate as well. This is an exercise in appraising the technology you use/recommend the most. The deadline for submissions is March 1st.

Submit your blog article to the next edition of the Carnival of Genealogy using our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on our blog carnival index page.
