In excess of 550 surnames were extracted from unindexed registers of baptisms and marriages (1784-1867) for the Roman Catholic parish in Przewrotne, district of Rzeszów, province of Rzeszów, Poland. (As of the January 1999 reorganization, the province is now known as Podkarpackie). Przewrotne lies on the road heading north from the city of Rzeszów to the town of Ranizów. It is found on the river Młynowka where it joins with the river Olchówka on its flow towards the river Łęg. On modern maps or atlases, Przewrotne may be found in southeastern Poland between highways #9 and #19, north of the city of Rzeszów, just southeast of Kolbuszowa.

BACKGROUND: Przewrotne was founded about 1553 in the area of a royally owned forest preserve. Its founder was the castellan Jordan from Kraków who was also the lord squire of the royal village of Zagłobień. Jordan built the parish church and supported the local pastor. Later Przewrotne became the property of Count Andrzej Tarnowski in 1581, when the church originally built was annexed to the church in Kołaczyce. The church was restored in the 1600’s. In 1657 Rakoczy and his army invaded Poland when Przewrotne was sacked and all the parish records were lost in the fires. The present brick church was built in 1823. At that time there were 368 houses with 1,933 inhabitants. It was predominantly Roman Catholic, with 7 Protestants and 24 Jews. There were 2 large estate farms in Przewrotne. One estate consisted of 6 houses and 75 inhabitants, of which 57 were Roman Catholic, and 18 Jewish. The small settlement of Smolen was located on its ground. The estate totaled 513 morgen of farms (1 morg is the equivalent of 2.116 acres), 84 morgen of meadows and gardens, 32 morgen of pasture land, and 798 morgen of forest. The second estate consisted of 2,157 morgan of farmland, 562 morgan of meadows, 286 morgen of pasture and 221 morgen of forests. Przewrotne and its estates were surrounded by pine forests on two sides and resided on a sandy plane, bordering Stykanie on the south, Hucisko on the west, and Gwizdów on the north. For the time frame included in these records the area was known as Galizien (Polish (Galicia) as part of the Austrian partition of Poland. The Family History Library has two rolls of microfilm containing these vital records which were filmed March 2, 1971 at the Archives in Warsaw from a copy of the original records. Film numbers are #0766043 and #0766044. Data for these vital records were originally recorded on fixed forms and are in Latin and include separate registers for Gwizdów, Hucisko, and Klapówka. Entries are also included for Pogwizdów. (1)

The author reviewed the film during research for data on his grandfather Marcin Gaweł born in Przewrotne. Family names appearing in this film include; Brudz, Dziubek, Gaweł, Kaczor, Kołodziej, Kramarz, Laskus, Osetek, Pastuła, Pokryfka/Pokrywfka/Pokriwka, Susek and Wilk.

Book Review: First Names of the Polish Commonwealth: Origins & Meanings

FIRST NAMES OF THE POLISH COMMONWEALTH: ORIGINS & MEANINGS, by William F. Hoffman and George W. Helon, 426 pages, 6 x 9 inches perfect bound, published in 1998, ISBN O-924207-06-X. Available from the Polish Genealogical Society of Michigan, Burton Historical Collection, Detroit Public Library, 5201 Woodward Ave., Detroit, Ml 48202. $22.00 postage paid.

In the words of Hoffman, "The basic purpose of this book is simple: it was designed to help you find the names of your Polish ancestors and understand what they meant."

"By necessity this book approaches the subject of names from the point of view of those researching Polish genealogy. This approach seems obvious enough, but it has some consequences. The choice of names for inclusion depended on whether a particular name is likely to show up in Polish research. Many names have become common in Poland within the last few decades... Finally, the names that are included are generally presented in Polish spellings. Numerous spellings were included that might appear in German, Russian, Ukrainian, or Yiddish contexts, with cross references to their Polish forms but there’s no question you’ll have more success finding names if you "think Polish".

Laying groundwork to help us understand the historical development of names in Poland, the author begins by explaining that the first names given a new-born were based on pagan customs and religion, and continued until the year 966 A.D. when Poland converted to Christianity, thus this lasted for almost a thousand years. The influence of other established religions then followed; Roman Catholics, Greek Catholic, Orthodox Christian, Protestants, and Jews.

We are then apprised of the fact that Polish names were influenced by linguistics; Belarusian, Czech, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Latin, Lithuanian, Russian, Slovak, Ukrainian, Yiddish, - and believe it or not English.

We are then taken to the main portion of the which book proceeds to provide us with over 300 pages of information on first names. Names are arranged in ascending alphabetic order. If a name has no data listed it will refer you to an alternate name that has the information. For a name with data, it will first be identified as to gender (male or female). This will be followed by a number indicating how many Polish citizens had that name in 1990. If the name has an equivalent in the opposite gender of that shown, the opposite gender name is shown. If there are similar names, they will be listed with the number of individuals using the name. The next information will indicate the basis of the name and any definition when applicable. Numerous spellings were included that might appear in German, Russian, Ukrainian or Yiddish contexts. In many instances the name is shown in Cyrillic or Hebrew print type. Diminutive forms i.e. shortened versions are shown, followed by listings of names days celebrated in the both the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches.

The book concludes with a five section Appendix including samples of five pertinent alphabets, an explanation of differences in Cyrillic alphabets (Russian and Ukrainian), Cyrillic forms of selected Jewish names, Lists of Germanic, Lithuanian, and Slavic name roots used in Ancient Compound Names, and an Index.

Both of these books extensively use published works of Kazimierz Rymut, which were based on data from PESEL, the Polish Government Information Center which assigns Polish citizens an identification number similar to the US Social Security Number.

Both books are outstanding! They can stand alone or serve as perfect companions to each other. They certainly deserve to be included in every Polish genealogical researcher’s library.

The original article which appeared in the January 1999 issue of the Polish Eaglet reviewed both books in one article. The review was split into two separate reviews for posting on this blog.

POLISH SURNAMES: ORIGINS AND MEANINGS (Second Edition), by William F. Hoffman, 580 pages, 6 x 9 inches perfect bound, published in 1997, ISBN 0-924207-04-3. This is an updated version of Mr. Hoffman’s original effort and contains nearly TWICE as many surnames as the First Edition. The first half consists of 12 chapters explaining the origins and meanings of Polish surnames. It explains that there are twelve surname root indexes, however for convenience they have been combined into five categories. The book dedicates a chapter to each of the five. However Part II of the book still sorts by the twelve sources.

The second half is an index of some 30,000 common surnames, organized by the roots they came from, with indication of how many Polish citizens bore each surname as of 1990.

Hoffman explains that the use of surnames transitioned society from a one name society, to a two name society when the use of surnames was introduced and many Polish names are not Polish in origin at all, but ultimately German, Russian Czech, Ukrainian, Latin, Greek, Italian, French, Belarussian, Lithuanian, Yiddish, or Hebrew origin , and that’s only a partial list. To understand a Polish name, you must recognize the name’s root and distinguish it from the suffixes that follow it. However, there are not always suffixes present, but there usually is at least one.

"Instead I decided to devote the book’s first half to explaining how surnames were formed and given examples of how name-roots and suffixes combined: the second half would list the most common surnames, organized by their roots."

These educated guesses "will make the book far less useful for serous scholars, but this book is not primarily for them; it’s for dedicated amateurs who don’t speak Polish, don’t have the resources to conduct or commission in-depth research but would like to gain some insight as to what their names might mean and how they might have arisen".

Surnames are formed based on patronymics, toponyms, suffixes, nicknames, foreign suffixes, trades/occupations, professions, positions, and use of first names as last names. Eamples are given on how a single root can become different surnames based on its combination with suffixes. Sometimes multiple roots are combined with suffixes. Open your eyes to the many, many trees, animals, etc. which may have been used as a basis for your surname.

Jews had a different way of using surnames as each generation formed, the surname changed. Many Jewish names sound German because Yiddish is a dialect of the German language. Hoffman notes that this second edition corrects errors introduced on Jewish naming conventions used in the first edition.

As Poles became assimilated into American Society, Polish people became tired of fighting peoples inability to pronounce their names correctly. Names were influenced by handwriting, foreign interpretation, and grammar amongst other influences, i.e. Sandowski became Sandusky.

This book is a perfect companion to First Names of the Polish Commonwealth: Origins & Meanings, by William F. Hoffman and George W. Helon, which is reviewed in the next post.

This is another in a series of articles that identify returning Haller’s Army troops who had any history of association with the State of Michigan. The series provides valuable information for researchers by identifying the following information.

• Who the returning troops were with descriptive characteristics.
• Valuable emigration and/or naturalization information leads for many of the soldiers.
• Important information regarding their places of birth. (Most were born in Poland, and were classified as Ret. Res., (Returning Residents) however some were born in the United States and were US Citizens.
  

Another of the ships returning Haller’s Army troops was the USAT (US Army Transport) Mercury, which left the port of Danzig (now known as Gdansk) on June 16, 1920, and arrived at New York June 28 1920.

The Ship
The USAT Mercury was originally built as the SS Barbarossa at Hamburg, Germany in 1896 for the North German Lloyd Line. She was 525 feet long, and 60 feet wide, with two funnels, two masts and had a speed of 15 knots. She began sailing on May 24, 1897 and had a carrying capacity of 2,392 passengers, with 230 in first class, 227 in second class and 1,935 in third class and a crew of 226. The Barbarosa began her last voyage from Bremen to New York on July 18, 1914 and subsequently took refuge in August at Hoboken N.J. She was later interned at New York from 1914-1917, seized by the United States Navy and placed under the American flag when the United States entered World War 1 April 6, 1917. Damage inflicted by her crew prior to seizure was repaired and she was commissioned August 3, 1917. Shortly thereafter she was renamed the USS Mercury.

The Mercury got underway for her first transatlantic troop ferrying mission January 4, 1918. Before the armistice of November 11, 1918, she had completed seven voyages to France, carrying over 18,000 passengers. After the armistice, she reversed the flow of troops, making eight crossings to return 20,000 to the U.S. After completing her last crossing as a U.S. Navy ship September 19, 1919 she was decommissioned and turned over to the Army Transport Service September 19, 1919. In 1920 she went to the Baltic Steamship Corporation of America for a proposed New York-Halifax-Copenhagen-Danzig service but the firm went bankrupt before it could begin. In 1924 she arrived in the United States where she was scrapped in Baltimore.

The Passengers
Passenger list information for the returning General Haller troops is contained in Volume 6470 that has been recorded on LDS film #1571373. There were 1,853 returning troops listed on 105 page sets of manifests. Extracting each soldier from the pages would be a project of great magnitude. Therefore this extraction is limited to those troops who either originally resided in, had relatives in, or were returning to the State of Michigan. This extraction has 197 soldiers listed.

Payment of passage was split between the Polish and United States Governments. The text for column 16 of the manifests read, By whom was passage paid? (Whether alien paid his own passage, whether paid by any other person, or by any corporation, society, municipality, or government). An analysis of the passenger manifests (column 16) identifies that of the total 1,853 passengers 628 had their passage paid for by the Polish Government while 1,225 had their passage paid for by the United States.

The Data
The format of data provided for each soldier is as follows. The surname appears first in bolded type, followed by the given name, then the page number and line sequence where the soldier’s information is found on the manifest, followed by his age in the format ‘years/months’, followed by marital status (S=single, M=married W=Widower) then occupation, then last permanent location, then the nearest person known and relationship with their address, followed by the intended final destination, followed by the length of time at the last reported location, and finally the place of birth. In some instances a bonus appears providing information related to a previous emigration.

Haller’s Army Troops Returning to the United States: Arrival of the Princess Matoika

This is the second in a series of articles that identifies returning Haller’s Army troops who had any history of association with the State of Michigan. This series details and identifies ten ships that made at least twelve trips returning the expatriated troops. The articles provide valuable
information for researchers by identifying the following.

• Who were the returning soldiers, what were their ages, marital status, profession and last
  permanent address prior to leaving for military duty in Europe?


• Who was the nearest known person, relationship and address?


• To what place was the expatriated soldier returning and in some instances, who was the
  person he or she was joining?


• Important information regarding their places of birth. (Most were born in Poland, and were classified as Ret. Res. (Returning Residents) some were born in the United States and were thus U.S. citizens.


• Valuable emigration and/or naturalization information leads for many of the soldiers.

The second of the ships returning Haller’s Army troops was the Princess Matoika, which left the port of Danzig (now known as Gdańsk) on May 2, 1920, proceeded to Antwerp, Belgium and Southampton, England and arrived at New York May 23, 1920.

The Ship(2)
The ship was built in Stettin (Polish Szczecin) as the steamship Kiautschou for the Hamburg-American Line. It had a passenger capacity of 327 passengers in 1st class, 103 in 2nd class, 80 in 3rd class, 1,700 in steerage and carried a crew of 230. In Feb 1904 it was sold to the North German Lloyd Line and renamed the Prinzess Alice. In Aug 1914 the Prinzess Alice was interred in Manila. On April6, 1917, it was seized by the US Shipping Board and renamed the Princess Matoika. In 1918 it became a US Navy transports and was handed back to the US Shipping Board in 1919. In 1920 it was chartered to the US Mail Steamship Company.

The Passengers(3)
Passenger list information for the troops returning on the Matoika is contained in Volume 6406 that is available on LDS film #1571353. Thece are 1,707 returning troops listed on pages 184 through 320. Extracting each soldier’s name from the pages would be a project of great magnitude. Therefore this extraction is limited to those troops who either originally resided in, had relatives in, or were returning to the state of Michigan. This extraction has 205 soldiers listed. Four exceptions have been made to the previous guideline used (Michigan related troops) but are included in this Michigan extraction of 201 soldiers.

During the process of review I found potential leads to possible ancestors. The first, was Walter Pastula (the same name as my father) and the second Jan Pustola, both of New York. Walter Pastula coincidentally was reportedly born in Kolbuszowa, the birth area of my grandmother Rozalia Dluzeń Pastula. As an additional note of interest, two priests, Rev. Frs. Kowalski and Rozmus born in Poland were also part of the extraction, were from New York and added for interest.

Payment of passage was apparently split between the Polish and United States governments. The text for column 16 reads, ‘By whom was passage paid? Whether alien paid his own passage, whether paid by any other person, or by any corporation, society, municipality, or government.” An analysis of the passenger list pages “column 16” identifies that 703 soldiers had their passage paid by the Polish government, while 756 soldiers had their passage paid by the United States government. Eleven (11) pages were incorrectly noted or absent of any notation. These 11 pages list 248 soldiers whose payment of passage is not clear.

The Data
The format of data provided for each soldier is as follows. The surname appears first in bolded type, followed by the given name, then the page number and line sequence where the soldier is found, his age in the format “years/months”, followed by marital status (S=single, M=married, W=widower) occupation, last permanent location, the nearest person known and relationship with their address, the length of time at the last reported location, and finally the place of birth. In some instances a bonus appears providing information related to a naturalization or previous emigration.

Editor’s Note: It is standard practice that spellings from documents not be changed when extracting information from source records, even when it is known to be in error. Spellings included in these extractions are as they appeared in the passenger lists. When an item was subject to interpretation a question mark (?) has been inserted, to caution that the data was a best guess. Likewise when a guess was made, the offered interpretation has a question mark (?) following it.
